What is Gladue Writing?

Gladue writing is the practice of preparing submissions for the Court that give essential context about an Indigenous person. A Gladue submission helps the court understand a person’s background including the ongoing impacts of colonization, systemic racism, intergenerational trauma, and personal challenges. Gladue submissions provide information about potential support options, alternatives to incarceration, personal goals, and provide a path rooted in healing and accountability that is tailored to the unique needs of the person.

Getting Certified in Gladue Writing

The Integrated Justice Program offers three levels of Gladue Writing Training that can be specialized to meet the unique needs and capacity of your organization. Our goal is to increase the capacity of Gladue writing so that every person who needs a Gladue has access to one. Flexible and effective training is key to increasing access to quality Gladue submissions.

Please note that there is currently no certification requirement in Saskatchewan to write Gladue Reports. Our trainings give you the tools to write Gladue submissions that are trauma-informed and guided by an Indigenous-led approach.

Level 1:

This training will give you the tools to write a Gladue Letter or Gladue-informed Support Letter. These shorter submissions can still bring forward an individual’s Gladue factors to the courts for consideration.

Level 2:

Upon completion of this training, you will be able to write a Limited Gladue Submission which is typically a 10-12 page document and is based on one primary interview. Certification is available upon completion of Level 2 once you have submitted a document to us. Certification is optional.

Level 3:

Completing this training will prepare you for writing a full Gladue Report which includes a primary interview and two collateral interviews. This training has a flexible timeline and individuals can take as long as they need to complete it.
